CHELSEA HOME GAME
Arriving back in London, we booked into our studio apartment
and met up for coffee with my friend Spencer who had procured for me a birthday
present of a ticket to see my favorite football/soccer team Chelsea play the
second leg of the Europa Cup semi-final at their home ground Stamford Bridge.
In the early sixties I had been a regular at home games but had not been back
since elements of crowd hooliganism began creeping in and scaring me away. It was pure joy to once
again be at a game live. At the stroke of half time Basel (Swiss champions)
took a one goal lead which dampened the spirits of the crowd somewhat. However
three Chelsea goals in the span of ten second half minutes got the Chelsea fans
singing once more:
“We know who we are,
Champions of Europe,
We know who we are.”
Final result: Chelsea 3, Basel 1 (aggregate score 5-2).
Chelsea now qualify for the Europa Cup Final in Amsterdam vs. Benfica of
Portugal on May 15.
